Karpenissi poised to co-host #EuroVolleyU18M
News from the National Federations

Karpenissi, Greece, February 17, 2020. The organisation of the 2020 #EuroVolleyU18M Final Round is slowly entering its final stages as Greece, co-hosts alongside Italy, prepare to host the competition in the mountain retreat of Karpenissi, 9-19 July.

Technical Advisor and Treasurer of the Hellenic Volleyball Federation, Mr Takis Kavallierakis, together with the NF Director, Periklis Bakodimos held a series of meetings with local authorities last week in Karpenissi, finalising many details of the organisation.

Located at an altitude of 960 metres in central Greece, Karpenissi is an established winter resort, featuring one of Greece’s most popular skiing centres. However, the town of 8,000 has also developed into a major hub that attracts teams from across a wide variety of sports, especially for their pre-season training.

“For Karpenissi and the Prefecture of Evrytania the EuroVolleyU18 Men is yet another great sporting event that helps complete the puzzle of major international competitions that we have hosted over recent years,” said Aris Tasios, Deputy Governor of the region, following his meeting with the Volleyball Federation officials.

“It is our Region’s goal to establish Karpenissi as a popular sporting destination. We already have the necessary infrastructure, including sporting facilities, tracks, indoor swimming pools and more - all ready to host major international events. It is thus a great honour for us that the Hellenic Volleyball Federation has selected Karpenissi for this competition. Events such as this in rural areas are embraced by local fans and become a point of reference for the local communities, instead of being ‘lost’ in large cities,” he added.

“This is a huge event for our town,” added Deputy Mayor Yannis Sveronis. “One of our goals is for local fans, especially our youth, to get to know Volleyball better, from up close. Of course, this is also a great opportunity to promote Karpenissi internationally and make it known across Europe.”
