Volleyball city Daugavpils poised to host EEVZA #EuroVolleyU18M qualifier

Daugavpils, Latvia, November 21, 2019. The Eastern European Volleyball Zonal Association (EEVZA) U17 Championship will take place in Daugavpils from November 21 to 24, with the eventual winners qualifying for the 2020 edition of the U18 European Championship co-hosted by Italy and Greece.
The Latvian team trained by Lauris Iecelnieks and Janis Jerumanis will play against Poland, Georgia and Belarus in Pool B. Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Ukraine will compete in Pool A. In each group, teams will contest a single round robin. On the last day of the tournament, teams finishing first, second, third and fourth in their respective pool will play against each other, thus determining the final standing of the competition.
This year’s U17 European Championship bronze medallists Poland, as well as Belarus and Russia, who finished seventh and eighth in the continental event held in Bulgaria last summer, are among the favourites of this tournament. The event represents a good opportunity for young Latvian players to test their skills and boost their development.
The tournament takes place in Daugavpils for a good reason. National team’s setter Deniss Petrovs and middle blocker Tom Svans have both graduated from Daugavpils Volleyball School. Former team leader Gundars Celitans, as well as the winners of the 2020 Beach Volleyball Olympic qualifying event held in China, Anastasija Kravcenoka and Edgars Tocs have spent quite some time in the city. This year there are three candidates to the Latvian U17 national team from Daugavpils Children and Youth School – the son of long-time female national team player Sana Catlaksa - Leo Catlakss, plus Sandis Vilcans and Artems Petrovs.
Daugavpils previously hosted an EEVZA zonal championship in 2016. There are plans to host major Volleyball events, both international and national, in cooperation with the city administration in the future as well.
