Four Brazilians in Moscow – Was that the sequel of Jamaica's Cool Runnings?
CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour 2019 - Moscow
Moscow, Russia, December 26, 2018. The CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour 2019 stop in Moscow broke new ground in many ways. It was the very first tournament with three players standing on each side of the net, and the first Snow Volleyball event of this magnitude organised in a major city. To confirm the pioneering role played by the CEV in the development of this sport on the global stage, the tournament featured, among others, 2008 Olympic champion Lloy Ball from USA as well as a Brazilian team – with both finishing the competition in ninth place.
Brazil is obviously a Beach Volleyball powerhouse but four of their players decided to travel to Moscow to test their skills on snow. It was the experience of a lifetime for Luciano Ferreira de Paula, Oscar Brandão, Vinicius Freitas and Marcio Gaudie Ley.
“This is a totally new experience for us,” they said. “We never played on snow before, because we spend all of our time on sand, working and training for the Beach Volleyball season. The conditions here are obviously very different than those we are used to at home.”
The Brazilians could not use a match point against a Russian team and eventually failed to make it to the quarterfinals. However, this is likely not to be their last experience with Snow Volleyball. “We really like Snow Volleyball and we would like to go and represent Brazil at the Olympic Winter Games,” they added. Who knows how things will evolve. For now Luciano, Oscar, Vinicius and Marcio can be proud of being the first ever team from Brazil and South America to compete at an international Snow Volleyball event. This is an achievement that none will ever be able to take away from them!
