Maccabi fail to go for all-deciding Golden Set, LVIV progress to CEV Cup 16th Finals
2018 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men

Tel Aviv, Israel, November 28, 2017. Despite storming to a 3-2 victory in their re-match with Barkom-Kazhany LVIV, Israel’s Maccabi TEL-AVIV have to bid farewell to the 2018 edition of the CEV Volleyball Cup – Men since last week their Ukrainian rivals had claimed a 3-1 victory on home soil. Barkom-Kazhany, on the other hand, progress to the 16th Finals where they will play Serbia’s Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD.

Maccabi TEL-AVIV played with glowing hearts in an effort to secure a 3-0 or 3-1 victory and vie for the all-deciding Golden Set. The Israelis were close to achieving this feat as they stormed to a 2-0 lead but Barkom-Kazhany LVIV responded by taking sets 3 and 4 – and as a result, with the score standing at 2-2 in sets, the tiebreak was only a matter of honour, with Maccabi eventually sealing a 3-2 victory (25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 19-25, 15-13).

“I am very disappointed since I had the feeling that we could make it to the Golden Set,” said Maccabi head coach Zohar Bar Netzer. “Unfortunately, we missed a few key players tonight but we go back to the national league determined to retain our title from last year so that we can return to the European Cups and capitalise on this experience.”

Earlier this season, Maccabi TEL-AVIV had lost to Shakhtior SOLIGORSK of Belarus in the second round of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League.
