14/08/2016 21:02 Germany and Czech Republic claim top honours at #EuroBeachVolleyU18 2016 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship Brno, Czech Republic, August 14, 2016. The 2016 U18 European Beach Volleyball champions were crowned on Sunday afternoon in Brno. Germany’s Lukas Pfretzschner and Robin Sowa claimed the top honours in the men’s competition as did home stars Marie-Sara Stochlova and Martina Maixnerova in the women’s tournament. Pfretzschner/Sowa edged Russia’s Sergey Gorbenko and Vasilii Ivanov in the gold medal match (21-19, 26-24). The two young guys are Germany’s third tandem to be crowned U18 European champions – Hendrik Matthiessen/Stefan Uhmann had achieved the same feat in 2003 – also in Brno – while Julius Thole/Sven Winter stood on top of the podium two years ago in Kristiansand, Norway. The most exciting and dramatic match of the final day in Brno was definitely the semi-final where the Germans played Italy’s Jakob Windisch/Paolo Cappio. The Italians claimed an incredibly close first set 32-30 before the Germans responded with a comprehensive 21-11 win in the second. The outcome of the semi was decided at the tie-break which finished into overtime too (19-17) with the Germans eventually making it through to contest the gold medal match. 2015 gold medal winners Timothée Platre/Rémi Bassereau of France had to be content with the bronze medal this time around after beating Windisch/Cappio 21-14, 21-16 in the ‘small final’. The women’s final was just as exciting with home favourites Marie-Sara Stochlova and Martina Maixnerova edging Russia’s Olga Kozhadey and Elena Fediunova 16-21, 21-17, 15-8. Even a medical time-out asked by the Russian team in the tie-break could not stop the triumphal march of the home team and after that short interruption the Czechs resumed their flawless run and celebrated with gold in the end. Stochlova and Maixnerova follow in the footsteps of their famous countrywomen and Olympians Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova who had netted the U18 European title in 2005 in Illichivsk, Ukraine. Stochlova also improved on the bronze medal she had won last year in Riga along with Tereza Kotlasova. Serbia’s Tijana Basic and Irena Drobnjak made history claiming the first ever European medal for their country in Beach Volleyball – they did so winning the ‘small final’ with Germany’s Svenja Müller and Hanna Viemann (26-24, 22-20).
