European Tour off to ‘snowy start’ at Mount Erciyes
2018 CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour
Kayseri, Turkey, January 12, 2018. The 2018 edition of the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour started on Friday at Mount Erciyes, Turkey – the country’s fifth-highest peak at 3,917 m – where a Snow Volleyball event of this calibre is taking place for the second straight year. The tournament began on Friday with the qualification round and the players having to cope with challenging weather conditions, including strong winds and snowfall. Mount Erciyes is one of the top addresses for winter sports in Turkey and tourists spending the weekend there can look forward to a couple of exciting days filled with Snow Volleyball.
Two Russian teams, Valeriy Durnin/Ivan Golovin and Vsevolod Bobrikov/Vladislav Mikhalev progressed to the men’s main draw at the end of the qualification round. In the women’s competition, Turkey’s Belinay Sari/Remziye Başak Uyanik and Sevcan Eyi/Beyza Dursun, who were all playing Snow Volleyball for the first time, made it to the main draw as well.
Sari and Uyanik, who live in Antalya on the Mediterranean coast, made their Snow Volleyball debut at Mount Erciyes. “We already participated in many Beach Volleyball tournaments but for the first time we had the opportunity to play Volleyball on snow. We live in Antalya and it is a summer seaside resort. It does not snow at all down there. It was very challenging and a lot of fun at the same time. We had difficulties to control the ball from time to time due to the weather conditions. We made some mistakes at the beginning but we were able to adjust very quickly. Tomorrow we will play against more experienced teams in the main draw. We will enjoy the moment and the experience so that we can improve also ahead of the next tournaments,” they said.
