To maintain Snow Volleyball’s positive feeling, you have to be a fair player - Schnetzer
2016 CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour
Kronplatz / Plan de Corones, Italy, April 4, 2016. The men’s final in Kronplatz / Plan de Corones – the last stop on the inaugural CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour – is in its culmination. The Austrian-and-German duo Florian Schnetzer/Florian Schweikart have won the first set and the score is 14-14 in the second. Schnetzer faults on attack, but the referee does not see it and calls it in favour of his team – 15-14 – match point and championship point for the Florians!
But Schnetzer does not think so. He raises his hand in a courageous act of fair play and admits that the ball touched the antenna after his spike. The referee thanks him and changes his mind – 15-14, but in favour of the opponents – set point for Benedikt Doranth/Maximilian Hauser. The Germans take advantage of it to tie the match and eventually win the gold in the tie-breaker.
The DJ plays the German hit “Applaus, Applaus”, but the applause is not only for the champs, but also for Austria’s Florian Schnetzer, whose act in the name of fair play may have cost him the crown.
“I know these opponents really well and I think they would have done the same in the same situation,” commented Schnetzer, who has been one of the stars on the Snow Volleyball tour for years and is known for his commitment to the sport and selfless style of playing on the snow. “I really like the atmosphere at these Snow Volleyball tournaments and I think, for the sake of this positive feeling, you have to be a fair player on the court. I do not think my act cost us the match. We had the chance to score the next point with the side-out. We had our chances to turn the game in the third set as well. But what is important, I really enjoyed the ambiance here a lot - the awesome views and the happy people watching and celebrating with us on the court.”
