Snow Tour powerhouses deliver on the first day in Bakuriani
CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour 2020
Bakuriani, Georgia, February 8, 2020. After the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour opener in Tsakhkadzor, the tour continues in Bakuriani this weekend. The Main Draw phase includes 16 men and 7 women teams, who began the competition on Saturday and continued to play until late evening. The gold and silver medallists from Tsakhkadzor, Russia and Lithuania, reached the semi-finals of the women’s event alongside Romania and one of the home teams. Round 3 in the men’s competition will begin on Sunday morning.
The first gold medalists of this season Bobrikov, Bogatov, Mikhalev and Daianov from Russia faced Slovakia as their first opponent. After winning the match 2-0 (15-8, 15-7), they moved to play Switzerland’s Spahr, R.,Spahr, M., Zurgilgen and Furrer in Round 2, winning in three sets. The Round 3 brings the best team from Tsakhkadzor an all-Russian duel against silver medallists Shabalin, Markov, Polikarpov and Kayumov.
The bronze medallists from Snow Tour opener in Armenia, Russians Bakhnar, Kuzmin, Smorchkov and Shapkin began the competition with two victories, moving straight into Round 3. Their next opponent will be Saint-Vanne, Petrov and El-Ghouti from France, who reached the Round 3 by beating both Italian teams without losing a set.
Russia’s Motrich, Pavlova, Novikova and Iarantceva started their journey in Bakuriani playing against Georgia’s Diasamidze, Palavandishvili and Tsotsonava. The match ended in favour of the Russian team at 2-0 (15-10, 15-7). In the semi-final Russia will be facing the team from Romania (Corcoz, Ilie, Sandu and Bradatan), who finished 4th in Tsakhkadzor.
A high number of interesting rallies entertained the fans following the women’s competition. Home teams from Georgia met each other on the court once again after their national championship. The current champions of Georgia Sanadze, Kvernadze and Shakarashvili are the only Georgian team to reach the semi-finals, where they will be facing the team from Lithuania.
Snow weather is expected by the organisers in Bakuriani as the anticipated knockout round is taking the centre stage on the final day in Georgia.
