Georgia celebrate historic silver medal, Russia top Snow Tour podium again
CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour 2020

Bakuriani, Georgia, February 9, 2020. The final day of the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour was a really historic one for the host country. Georgia was not only celebrating the birthday of volleyball, created on 9th of February 1895, but witnessed one of their women’s teams reaching the final of the Snow Tour stop in Bakuriani. Kvernadze, Shakarashvili and Sanadze won against Lithuania in the semi-final to face Motrich, Pavlova, Novikova and Iarantceva from Russia.

Russia repeated their success from Tsakhkadzor, going through the tournament without losing a single set. The final match was no different, as the Russians beat the home team 2-0 (15-9, 15-6). Georgia's Kvernadze, Shakarashvili and Sanadze - recently crowned national champions - were the only team from the host country to reach this phase of the competition. After failing to win the semi-final against the Georgian team, Lithuania (Bekis / Frelik / Kvedaraite) met Romania (Corcoz / Ilie / Sandu / Bradatan) in the bronze medal match. Lithuania, who won a silver medal earlier this week in Tsakhkadzor, took the bronze winning 2-0 (15-10, 15-6), while Romania had to settle for the 4th place once more - just like they did in Armenia.

For the second consecutive time the podium in the men’s competition of this season’s Snow Tour was monopolised by three Russian teams. Shabalin, Markov, Polikarpov and Kayumov celebrated a much awaited gold medal for the first time, after edging the winners from Tsakhkadzor - Bobrikov, Bogatov, Mikhalev and Daianov - 15-8, 15-11. The all-Russian podium was completed by Bakhnar, Kuzmin, Smorchkov and Shapkin, who had finished third in Tsakhkadzor as well. The bronze medal came along with a 2-0 (15-11, 15-9) victory against the team from France (Saint-Vanne, Petrov and El-Ghouti).

After a well-deserved break, the teams will return to the snow as the Tour is moving to Slovakia. The next stop will take place in Donovaly on February 21-23.

While the temperatures reached extreme -15C degrees, the volleyball delivered by competing teams attracted many spectators.
