Teams delight fans despite snowfall at European Tour stop in Bakuriani
CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour 2019 - Bakuriani
Bakuriani, Georgia, February 16, 2019. The CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour 2019 stop in Georgia continued on Saturday with snow falling from early in the morning up until late at night, and the forecasts announce further snowfall for the final day of competition as well. The weather conditions, however, did not prevent the participating teams from delivering some truly exciting matches, with the tournament reaching its climax on Sunday with the medals at stake.
Georgia’s Gaprindashvili/Bluashvili/Tchelidze/Tevdoradze started their campaign in the women’s competition with a victory in a matchup with another team from the host country before losing to the gold medal winners of the European Tour stop held in January in Turkey, i.e. the Russian team consisting of Motrich, Syrtseva, Volodarskaya and Khakimzyanova. However, the Georgians are still in contention for a spot in the semis and on Sunday, they will be playing another Russian team, Filina/Romashova/Grechko/Lapteva to make it among the top four of the competition, what would be a historic achievement for Georgia.
One team from Russia (Lapteva/Pavlova/Terenteva/Novikova) and one from Turkey (Gökalp/Merve/Yalcin) have already secured their spot in the semis.
All of the men’s matches scheduled for Saturday finished in two sets and yet it was a joy to watch for the fans following the games under snowfall and floodlights. Another six matches will be taking place on Sunday to determine the eventual semi-finalists, with teams from Russia, Italy, Iran, Poland and Georgia still in contention. Russia completed a clean sweep of the men’s podium last year in Bakuriani, so let us see if this year they can repeat the same feat!
