Bonfatti delivers inspirational webinar for coaches working at entry level of the game
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, April 7, 2021. As many as 93 people followed the School Project webinar run on Wednesday afternoon by the CEV Technical and Development Department, with renowned Italian expert Carlo Bonfatti sharing his wealth of experience from many years spent working with children at the entry level of the game.

Carlo set the tone to his webinar by asking a key question to the audience, “Why are we here?” All coaches and teachers working with children should know their own reason(s) why they would take their time to follow such online clinic!

Bonfatti explained to the attendees that the Volley S3 and Spike Ball programmes run with much success by the Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV) comprise of three levels, each one identifying the skill levels needed for the games:
-    White (beginner)
-    Green (intermediate)
-    Red (advanced)

The main difference between Volley S3 and Spike Ball is that Volley S3 starts with a serve, and Spike Ball starts with a spike instead.

In an effort to deliver an interactive a webinar as possible, Carlo showed many videos of the programmes’ games and exercise progressions for the different levels of play – from tossing/catching style, bouncing, up until all normal Volleyball game actions.

The bottom line is that coaches and teachers must consider motor skills training when working with kids. Their capacity to react is foundational for the sport and therefore coaches / teachers should work on developing abilities such as acceleration vs. deceleration, following the ball with the whole body, and not just the eyes, learning to manage trajectories and much more.

Participants had questions related to the progression between white/green/red levels of the programmes, what to focus on when teaching spiking, and how to implement jumping/footwork techniques at a young age in Volleyball.

Carlo closed his inspirational lecture with advising that we must play for fun with the kids and give them a challenging learning environment in order to stimulate their continuous growth!

This webinar series will finish on April 16 with a session featuring USA’s Ruth Nelson.
