Sun and Sky News welcome the return of Volleyball in London
News from the clubs
London, England, April 6, 2021. A couple of weeks ago Little Giants Volleyball Club foretold that life in Clapham would soon look much more familiar. They could not have known how true that would be after the huge open space in south London hit the media headlines following crowds clashing with police trying to disperse folk assembled in large numbers. Although difficult to organise while complying with the regulations governing outdoor sport and group assembly, Volleyball was back for the Easter weekend and it all looked so normal that the TV crews of Sky News were back in the park to tell the world, interviewing players and club organisers.
Volleyballers started to assemble on Saturday. First, it was the junior children at the camp for under twelves. They were clearly thrilled to be running about again, being with their friends, playing their favourite sport. Later came older youth of school age with camps for boys and girls. Again their delight at being active was obvious and the camaraderie contagious. All had a great time and the sun shone.
Next day it was the turn of competition for adults. Difficult to organise under COVID-19 restrictions that limit the number of “households” that can assemble together, the club managed nevertheless to provide a day that participants described as “epic” and certainly impressed the television crews when they arrived as well as the extra spectators attracted by the attention of the cameramen. All had a thoroughly enjoyable day and the sun shone again.
The adults were back on Easter Monday for more Volleyball. Without TV’s attention this time, there was more time for games and another tournament got underway. With everyone clearly delighted at being able to play their sport once again and despite new rituals like cleaning the ball and regularly disinfecting their hands, a host of games were played. A day of reunions too – and the sun shone again.
It was an Easter weekend when the only thing that did not seem normal was the weather!
