Team Austria captain claims second Portuguese national league title with Benfica
News from the National Federations
Vienna, Austria, April 6, 2021. The captain of Team Austria, Peter Wohlfahrtstätter (pictured), claimed this past Sunday the Portuguese national league title while wearing the shirt of Sport LISBOA e Benfica – doing so for a second time in three years.
Benfica travelled to the Azores at the weekend and beat Fonte do Bastardo 3-0 on both Friday and Sunday. Therefore, the best-of-five championship series ended in a comprehensive 3-0 for Benfica.
The 32-year-old captain of the Austrian national team showed once again strong performances and played from start to end in each match. “We only lost two sets in six games in the semi-finals and finals, where we executed everything we had agreed upon tactically and played exactly what we set out to do,” Wohlfahrtstätter said. “That is why the end result is such. There is much routine in the team. We have players who have already achieved a lot - also with their national team. This is now the second championship title in a row after 2019, since unfortunately the outbreak of the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the playoffs last year. The contract negotiations will start next week, and Benfica wants to keep me. Since I feel good here, I think that we will agree on an extension. Now I will be staying here for two more weeks before I go to the national team. It is currently better in Lisbon as far as the pandemic goes. There are even restaurants open again, and the museums are opening again too. That is why I am staying here before I travel to Steinbrunn to join the national team.”
Team Austria are due to play the 2021 edition of the CEV European Silver League later this year, after failing to qualify for the final stage of EuroVolley 2021 back in January.
