22nd edition of Faroese Cup Finals coming up this Saturday
News from the National Federations
Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, February 26, 2021. The 22nd edition of the Faroese Cup Finals will be taking place on Saturday, in what will be the first ‘major’ Volleyball event since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
The women of SÍ Sørvágur are aiming for a third title in a row when they take on neighbouring club Dráttur in Saturday’s final. Undefeated throughout the season in both league and cup, SÍ are odds on favourites to clinch the cup against the league’s no. 2 Dráttur, but anything can happen in such a final. SÍ’s cup wins in the two previous years came after fiercely fought five-setters, so can we expect yet another one this year?
The men of Mjølnir Klaksvík are targeting their third cup title in succession as well. This time, however, the task will not be as easy as it was in the previous two years with straight set victories, as they are facing a very strong team from ÍF Fuglafjørður, the team with the most cup titles - 8 in total. Their last cup triumph was back in 2016 though, so they will be eager to get back to winning ways.
Mjølnir and ÍF have met six times this season – with three wins for each team, so we could be in for an epic final on Saturday.
The cup final event in the capital Tórshavn has been a huge success with spectators since it started in 2000, but this year’s edition will allow only a limited number of spectators due to the situation with the coronavirus pandemic. However, live broadcast of the matches in national television will be available as usual.
As always, also the future generations of volleyball players get their chance to appear on the big stage too, as 10 finals will be contested in different age groups from 12 to 19 years old. There is a special event for the youngest playing kids volleyball as well.
