French Federation launches call for applications to find Tillie’s successor
News from the National Federations
Paris, France, February 2, 2021. With the goal to prepare in the best possible way for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the FFVolley launched earlier today a call for candidates to succeed Laurent Tillie as head coach of the French men’s national team after the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The FFVolley agreed with Laurent Tillie last year that the latter, whose mandate was to end after the Tokyo Games initially scheduled for the summer of 2020, would remain at the helm of the team for another year in order to lead the Bleus at Tokyo 2020 - postponed to July / August 2021. Now, the French Volleyball Federation is preparing its succession by launching a call for applications for the post of head coach of their men’s national team.
A timing justified by Axelle Guiguet, National Technical Director of the FFVolley: “We did not wish to launch this call for candidatures before the FFVolley elections, but now that these have been held, it seems to us a priority to work on this file. Despite the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, we must start preparing for a home Olympics in 2024.”
The candidates, French or foreign, have until February 28 to send their files to the FFVolley and present the main lines of their project, which must be in accordance with the organisation’s main goals: securing a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and podium finishes in other major international competitions (Volleyball Nations League, World and European Championships). The National Technical Director will study the files and possibly, if conditions allow, interview the shortlisted candidates in March / April, with the appointment of the coach due to follow in May. “It is important to announce the name from the start of the international season, so as not to disrupt the players and staff in their preparation for the Olympics,” said Guiguet.
The national technical director adds, “What will count above all in our choice, in addition to the profile and skills, is the long-term project and vision for our men’s national team. They have already qualified for the next major international events: the 2021 European Championship, which will be the first competition for the new coach and his staff, the 2022 World Championship and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This Olympic cycle promises to be very exciting, but challenging for this team as well – which we know is already very competitive but there could be some positions where changes are needed.”
