Luxembourg, 26 January 2021. With the winter holidays now behind us it’s time to get back into the action of the CEV Champions League Volley as it returns with the second batch of Round 4 tournaments. First up are the Women's Pool B Tournament, taking place in Nantes, France (read the tournament preview HERE) and the Men's Pool A tournament taking place in Belchatow, Poland (read the tournament preview HERE) scheduled to start today 26th January, with the last match day being 28th January.
With top players on display from eight of the best clubs in Europe, let’s take a look at some of the best performing players in action this week in both tournaments.
Salvador Hidalgo - Fenerbahçe HDI ISTANBUL
This Cuban powerhouse, who has played in some of the most competitive leagues in Europe is one of the most fascinating players to watch at the moment. Despite his team going into this second tournament being 3rd in the pool standings, his performance during the first tournament of Pool A has been consistent, managing to get into the 3rd spot of the Best Scorer Rankings with 49 points (4.08 set average), only 4 points behind leader Drazen Luburic (Lokomotiv Novosibirsk).
In terms of top scorers from the other three teams from Pool A, all eyes will be on Ghara H. Milad Ebadipour - PGE Skra Belchatow (45 pts – 4.5 set average – 7th overall), Jakub Rybicki - Lindemans Aalst (39 pts – 3.55 set average – 11th overall) and Lukasz Kaczmarek – Grupa Azoty Kedzierzyn Kozle (32 pts – 4.57 set average – 22nd overall) as they will be hoping to continue their good form and push their team into the next round of the competition.
Brankica Mihajlovic - Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL
The Serbian outside spiker has had an amazing career for both clubs and country and this season she has her eye set on helping the Turkish giants from Istanbul to go as far as possible in the CEV Champions League. With the Italians from Imoco Conegliano as their main rivals in Pool B, this is no easy task for Brankica and Fenerbahçe but rather it seems to have motivated the Serbian from becoming the top scorer for her team with 54 points (5.4 set average) and sitting on 5th spot in the Best Scorer Rankings, 9 points behind top scorer Magdalena Stysiak (Savino del Bene Scandicci).
Despite having amazing players in attack, no player from the other three teams from Pool B makes the overall Top 20 of the Best Scorer Rankings. However, Olivera Kostic Brulec – Calcit Volley Kamnik (39 pts – 3.9 set average – 25th overall), Italian superstar Paola Egonu – A. Carraro Imoco Conegliano (38 pts – 6.33 set average – 27th overall) and Carli Anne Snyder – VB Nantes (30 pts – 3.33 set average – 43rd overall) are expected to add to their tally and to be the driving forces in attack for their teams in this second tournament of Pool B.
