CEV EuroBeachVolley 2020 among nominees for prestigious award in Latvia
CEV EuroBeachVolley 2020
Luxembourg, January 5, 2021. The CEV EuroBeachVolley 2020 held this past September in Jurmala is one of four nominees shortlisted for the Sporting Event of the Year 2020 in Latvia. This is especially remarkable since the organisers, with the help of the CEV as well as of their national and local authorities, were able to deliver such a major event even in times of coronavirus pandemic and to overcome the major disruptions caused by a heavy storm and subsequent flooding that stopped the tournament for a full day.
The other events shortlisted and competing with CEV EuroBeachVolley 2020 for such a prestigious award are:
1. The World Boxing Super Series Final match involving Latvian superstar Mairis Briedis against Cuba’s Yuniel Dorticos contested this past September 20 in Munich, Germany
2. The ceremony organised to present Oskars Melbardis, Arvis Vilkaste, Daumants Dreiskens and Janis Strenga with the gold medal for the four-man bobsleigh event of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics after the disqualification of Team Russia following a review of doping samples
3. Three rounds of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship held in Kegums, Latvia.
Latvian sports fans have cast their votes, which count for 50% towards determining the final standing. The votes of renowned sports journalists count for another 25%, complemented by those cast by some elite Latvian athletes, counting for the remaining 25%.
The ceremony to award the eventual winners was due to take place at the end of 2020, but restrictions in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus has resulted in its postponement.
