‘Prometey’ claim historic Ukrainian Supercup title to end Khimik’s reign
News from the National Federations

Horodok, Ukraine, October 24, 2020. SC ‘Prometey’ KAMIANSKE claimed on Saturday the women’s Ukrainian Supercup title after edging Khimik YUZHNY at the end of a truly dramatic match. ‘Prometey’ emerged victorious at the tiebreak (21-25, 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 17-15) after coming back twice from one set down. CEV President Aleksandar Boričić attended the match after travelling to Kyiv and Lviv earlier this weekend to attend the celebrations for the 95th anniversary of Ukrainian Volleyball as well as a meeting of the Ukrainian Volleyball Federation Executive Committee.

This was already the seventh match this season between ‘Prometey’ and Khimik, with a record of three wins apiece. Khimik had twice beaten ‘Prometey’ in the first round of the CEV Champions League back in September.

Therefore, everyone expected a truly exciting and close match, which eventually reached its climax in a closely fought tiebreak. Yuliya Boyko helped Khimik secure an 11-8 lead in the fifth set but middle blocker Diana Meliushkyna responded swiftly for ‘Prometey’ to make it 13-all. Khimik failed to use two match balls before Kateryna Silchenkova sealed the 3-2 victory for KAMIANSKE.

‘Prometey’ ended after five years the reign of Khimik YUZHNY to secure their first title in the competition. Moreover, Bulgarian coach Ivan Petkov celebrated his first triumph since taking the reins of the team.
