MEVZA League – Titleholders ACH Volley celebrate convincing win over Union Raiffeisen
News from the Zonal Associations

Vienna, Austria, October 15, 2020. MEVZA League table leaders and defending champions ACH Volley LJUBLJANA extended their winning streak to three matches in a row. On Wednesday night, Slovenia’s dominating team since many years needed just 69 minutes to celebrate a clean sweep (25-15, 25-16, 25-21) over last season’s bronze medallists Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL on home soil. While the ‘Orange Dragons’ have not dropped a single point so far, the ‘Nordmänner’ had to accept their second defeat this season. Therefore, Union WALDVIERTEL is currently sitting at the bottom of the table.

ACH Volley’s opposite, Bozidar Vucicevic topped the scorers’ charts on 16 points, while his teammate Matej Kök managed to put 11 to his name. Marek Sulc and Daan Streutker split the best scorer’s honours for the away side with 10 points each. Match Stats: spikes 35 vs 24, aces 4 vs 0, blocks 9 vs 9 and opponent errors 27 vs 19.

The ten-time champions showed their supremacy especially in the first two sets, when the team from Lower Austria did not find an answer to Amir Toukhteh’s serve. “We performed slightly better in defence. It was a solid performance but nothing more than that,” ACH Volley’s head coach Matija Pleško said.

Three matches are due to take place on Saturday evening. SK Zadruga AICH/DOB (AUT) will host their toughest national opponents in recent years Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL in their first MEVZA League match this season. Rookies UVC Holding GRAZ aim for their very first win in this competition against second-ranked OK Merkur MARIBOR, while the third match-up will see ACH Volley going up against their Slovenian rivals Calcit Volley KAMNIK.

The 2021 MEVZA League features seven men’s elite teams representing three countries. Alongside ACH Volley LJUBLJANA (SLO), OK Merkur MARIBOR (SLO), Calcit Volley KAMNIK (SLO) and UVC Holding GRAZ (AUT), SK Zadruga AICH/DOB (AUT), Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL (AUT) and HAOK Mladost ZAGREB (CRO) are competing in a double round robin format. After completion of the main round, the MEVZA League will be reaching its climax with the Final Four tournament scheduled for the last weekend of February.
