Beach Volleyball star Arvaniti eyes return to competition after recovering from injury
News from the National Federations
Athens, Greece, September 11, 2020. The rehabilitation of Vicky Arvaniti has entered the last and final stage. Almost a year ago, on October 22, 2019, the Greek Beach Volleyball star and former European champion injured her left Achilles tendon, so that she would eventually miss the remainder of the World Tour season. Eleven months later, two surgeries and countless hours spent in the gym and with the physiotherapist, Arvaniti is close to returning to competitive action, having entered the last stage of her recovery.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Arvaniti has the opportunity to return in time and together with her teammate Panagiota ‘Penny’ Karagkouni she will be working hard with the coaching staff of the Hellenic Volleyball Federation and try to qualify for the re-scheduled Olympics in Japan.
“It is almost a year since my injury and I am very happy that I have been able to return to the court. Every day I feel better and I am trying to find my rhythm back. I am blessed that in the hardest moment in my career, I have the best partners next to me. By the end of the year I will be 100% ready to return to play. Due to the pandemic I had the necessary time to recover and not to rush my rehabilitation. I am very optimistic about the future,” Arvaniti said.
Arvaniti has resumed training almost a year after suffering a serious injury
Karagkouni never doubted about Vicky’s recovery and she has been waiting patiently for her partner’s return. “I am very happy that Vicky has managed to come back, although from the beginning I was sure that this would happen. At this moment we still have our chances to qualify for the Olympics and we will give everything to compete at a high level and fight for a spot to play in Tokyo,” Karagkouni said.
Arvaniti is a two-time (2005, 2007) European champion with former partner Vasso Karadassiou. Moreover, she claimed a silver medal at the 2012 edition of EuroBeachVolley in tandem with Maria Tsiartsiani.
