CEV EuroVolley 2021 Qualifiers
Nicosia, Cyprus, August 26, 2020. Aiming for the surprise, the Cyprus men’s national team will soon compete in a EuroVolley 2021 Qualifier, which will be taking place between August 30 and September 6, 2020 at Tassos Papadopoulos – Eleftheria Stadium in Nicosia. In addition to Cyprus, the national teams of Spain, Moldova and Latvia will contest the 12 matches in Pool D. The eventual winners of the group will qualify for the final stage of EuroVolley 2021 co-hosted by Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia and Finland, with the runners-up still keeping a chance of achieving that same feat depending on the results of the other pools scheduled for early January 2021.
At the press conference held at the Ev Agonizesthai hall at the Olympic Palace in Nicosia, the President of the Cyprus Volleyball Association, Dr Michalis Krashias, shared details of the organisation. On the other hand, head coach Jorge Cannestracci, team captain Angelos Alexiou and player Stefanos Charidimou discussed the goals of the Cypriot national team.
“We are sure that from August 30 to September 6, the European Volleyball family will have the opportunity to enjoy with absolute safety 12 high-level matches that will be forever etched in their memory. In this period, our championship will be the only competitive Volleyball activity in Europe,” said Dr Krashias.
“Our team is young but we will make the effort to play against very good teams with the aim of achieving victories,” said head coach Cannestracci.
The captain of the Cypriot team, Angelos Alexiou, spoke in the same direction, emphasising that the team will put up a fight in all of their games and will be ready for the upcoming matches against strong teams.
Outside hitter Stefanos Charidimou spoke about the response of the players after many months of inactivity, stressing that, “It is really difficult for the players after five - six months without any games and especially at the national level. However, through training we try to find our form and be ready.”
