EEVZA hold online meeting to plan the next steps in times of coronavirus
News from the Zonal Associations

Riga, Latvia, August 21, 2020. The President of the Eastern European Volleyball Zonal Association (EEVZA) Vladimir Patkin chaired on Thursday a first, historic online meeting attended by representatives of all of the EEVZA member countries. The purpose of this action initiated by the EEVZA Executive Committee was to listen to the situation in each country in order to assess and understand how the member Federations are currently dealing with the challenges brought by the coronavirus pandemic.

Representatives from each National Federation described the situation in their own country and updated their colleagues on the possibilities to host sporting events according to the rules set by the respective national authorities.

Taking into account the information provided by Mr Karen Asmaryan, the attendees agreed to cancel the EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour event due to take place in Armenia. As for the zonal Beach Volleyball tournament that the Georgian Volleyball Federation is due to host in Batumi, for the moment, the EEVZA members have decided to postpone it to October.

Regarding the forthcoming Volleyball season, all Federations agreed that the planned events should be taking place while complying with the strictest measures to avoid any risk to spread COVID-19 infections. The Azerbaijan Volleyball Federation emphasised that due to the current pandemic situation in their country, it is almost impossible for them to organise any EEVZA championship there. Therefore, during the virtual meeting, the attendees agreed on a ‘Plan B’ – with Belarus, Estonia and Latvia stating their readiness to host the U17/U16 EEVZA Championships, which represent the 1st round of qualifications for next year’s CEV age-group European championships. Any further decisions and plans will be taken at the next online EEVZA meeting scheduled for September 22, 2020.

The members of the EEVZA Executive Committee had a separate short meeting as well, summarising the main points resulting from the discussions they previously had with all member Federations.
