Team Poland end 2020 season with two intra-squad matches
News from the National Federations
Warsaw, Poland, July 28, 2020. After playing two friendly matches with Germany last week in Zielona Gora, reigning world champions and EuroVolley 2019 bronze medallists Poland were due to face Estonia in Lodz on July 26 and 27, but the latter made last-minute changes in their travel plans, eventually cancelling their fixtures. The home team opted to play as scheduled, organising two exciting intra-squad matches.
In the first such game, the Michal Kubiak-led Team Michal bounced back from the opening set loss to Team Fabian – captained by Fabian Drzyzga – and rallied to a 2-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-22) victory.
Team Michal was composed of Kubiak, Tomasz Fornal, Karol Klos, Dawid Konarski, Marcin Komenda, Bartosz Kwolek, Grzegorz Lomacz, Maciej Muzaj, Piotr Nowakowski and Pawel Zatorski. On the other side of the net, Fabian Drzyzga was at the helm of a group including Bartosz Bednorz, Norbert Huber, Bartosz Kurek, Wilfredo Leon, Jan Nowakowski, Artur Szalpuk, Aleksander Sliwka and Damian Wojtaszek.
The second match was between Team Wilfredo and Team Karol, where the latter defeated the former 2-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-23).
Leon played with Bednorz, Fornal, Komenda, Kubiak, Kurek, Jan and Piotr Nowakowski, and Wojtaszek, while Klos played with Drzyzga, Huber, Konarski, Kwolek, Lomacz, Muzaj, Szalpuk, Sliwka and Zatorski.
“We are ending this strange but nonetheless positive season,” Michal Kubiak said in a video message to the fans. “The important thing is that we all arrived at this point safe and healthy. I hope you liked the sparring matches. We all wanted to give you as much entertainment as possible and I hope we succeeded in doing so. We wish you all the best and good health for the difficult time to come. Keep your fingers crossed for us and see you next year!”
Poland qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last summer and are due to contest the Olympic tournament pushed back to July-August 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
