CEV School Project to help revive the sport in Malta
News from the CEV

Valletta, Malta, July 27, 2020. In times of coronavirus pandemic, the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle has become even more apparent. On Monday, the Maltese Volleyball family made a very important step towards helping reach this goal with the official signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the CEV School Project “Play Volleyball, grow with it’ across schools of the Mediterranean archipelago. CEV President Aleksandar Boričić joined the event virtually from Belgrade to share some words of praise and encouragement for the local Volleyball community.

Through this project, the CEV will provide the Maltese Volleyball family with equipment to distribute in schools in order to grow and promote the popularity of the sport. In his opening address, Malta Volleyball Association (MVA) President Edward Gatt emphasised that this project can play a leading role in reviving Volleyball activities in Malta: “Today is a special occasion for our sport. We believe that through this agreement we are reaching the fundamentals for the growth of the sport in our country and will boast our clubs’ nursery. We would like to thank the CEV, SportMalta as well as Dr Grima and his team for all their time and assistance.”

Dr Clifton Grima, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations, attended the signing ceremony as a true testament to the full support provided by the Maltese government. “I would like to thank CEV for their collaboration and help in the promotion of sports. With this project, we are going to the grassroots and will be working with children, who are our future. This agreement is the first step towards a successful cooperation, which combines the social aspects of sport with the benefits from leading a healthy lifestyle. Sport has to be an integral part of the Maltese education system,” he said. “The agreement with the CEV is an example for other Federations and sports to follow. We have to go to our schools to maximise the number of people practicing sport. Such a project contributes to the full development of our children and surely augments the chances of reaching the target of more people leading a healthy life. We look forward to meeting the CEV President personally and will work to make sure that Malta can host successful Volleyball and Beach Volleyball tournaments in the near future, as part of our policy to increase sports tourism.”

“I would like to thank Dr Clifton Grima for his support to this project,” the CEV President said. “We realise that in all countries children need teachers and equipment to start playing Volleyball, and that they need some form of competition as well. While paying a visit to Malta, I could see with my own eyes that you have clubs and players. Now, the Malta Volleyball Association have leaders as well and I wish to thank MVA President Edward Gatt and Branko Vlahovic, because they are working very hard in order to re-start activities after a long break. The School Project is an important milestone, together with Beach Volleyball, for which Malta offers ideal conditions. I think a wake-up call for physical activity is especially important at this time when we have to stand up to fight against the novel coronavirus. Malta and the Malta Volleyball Association enjoy full support from the CEV Board of Administration in all of their current and future endeavours.”
