Volleyball is back in Ukraine as national league lower divisions resume
News from the National Federations
Kyiv, Ukraine, June 16, 2020. After a two-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic, national Volleyball competitions have finally resumed in Ukraine. Last weekend, matches scheduled for the first men’s national league took place, eventually crowning the team Epicenter-Podolyany from the city of Gorodok (see picture) as the eventual champions. However, to follow the rules in place to curb the spread of the novel virus, no spectators could follow the matches inside the arenas.
Mykhaylo Melnyk, President of the Ukrainian Volleyball Federation, was obviously happy with the return of competitive sport. “Our country and the whole world have gone through very difficult times with this terrible pandemic. We have decided to resume competitions starting from the lower divisions of our national league. This decision was not an easy one but it was worth it. We waited for the permission from the Government to hold competitions in our country and immediately we set the dates for the restart of the championship,” he said.
“Following all the recommendations of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, we developed all necessary measures for the safe delivery of these matches. Ukrainian Volleyball at this difficult time proves that it can develop and strengthen its position on the European and global stage. Matches of the major men’s and women’s leagues, as well as of the women’s first league and men’s second league will restart next weekend,” he continued.
Earlier this year, the management of the Ukrainian Volleyball Federation decided to cut short the men’s and women’s Super League without declaring any champions, as most European countries have done with their respective national championships as well.
