World Beach Volleyball Centre in Lorca provides home for health care workers
News from the National Federations

Madrid/Lorca, Spain, May 7, 2020. The World Technical Beach Volleyball Centre in the Spanish city of Lorca has changed its residents in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The facility built and run by the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB) in southeast Spain is currently hosting a number of health professionals working at the nearby Rafael Mendez Hospital.

After the abrupt closing of the permanent camp run there for the Spanish underage national teams, the centre adjusted its activities in order to support the fight against coronavirus. Since the introduction of quarantine and lockdown measures, many health professionals from the Region of Murcia have been using the facilities of the World Technical Beach Volleyball Centre.

“It is a privilege for us to use the facilities of the World Technical Beach Volleyball for the health professionals of Lorca,” said Agustín Martín Santos, President of the RFEVB. “This is an action that shows the generosity of the Spanish volleyball community towards such a special city for Beach Volleyball.”

The facilities have hosted more than a hundred professional health workers from the first days of the virus outbreak. The World Technical Beach Volleyball Centre has become an ‘oasis of rest and relief’ for the great heroes of this time, who have decided not to return to their homes and against putting their families at risk of contagion. The RFEVB has made available as many as 50 rooms for health care workers.

The state-of-the-art complex in Lorca includes four outdoor Beach Volleyball courts, two indoor Beach Volleyball courts, as well as a sports hall for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, a residence for athletes, a gym, a kitchen, a dining hall, a library and a parking area.
