SÍ Sørvágur retain Faroese women’s national cup title in front of CEV President
News from the National Federations

Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, February 22, 2020. On Saturday afternoon, CEV President Aleksandar Boričić witnessed a thrilling five-setter in the final of the Faroese women’s national cup where defending champions SÍ Sørvágur retained their title with a 3-2 victory (25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 19-25, 15-6) over Mjølnir Klaksvík.

SÍ looked set to take a two-set lead, but Mjølnir survived two set points to turn it around and level the match with a 27-25 win. After trailing 10-15 in the third set, Mjølnir drew level at 16-16, but at 20-20, SÍ sneaked ahead again to snatch the set 25-22. After that, Mjølnir turned on the power to win 25-19 in the fourth set to force the tiebreaker. In the decider, SÍ surged ahead 3-0 and 7-3, a deficit that Mjølnir never recovered from, and SÍ eventually claimed their second cup title in a row with a 15-6 win.

After the match, the CEV President, who is currently paying a visit to the North Atlantic archipelago, presented the two teams with the gold and silver medals before the Mayor of Tórshavn, Mrs Annika Olsen, handed the winners from SÍ Sørvágur the trophy designed for the national cup winners.

Mjølnir claim men’s title in emphatic style

Later in the evening, the men’s final was for the most a one-sided affair. Pre-favourites Mjølnir made short shrift in the first couple of sets, storming to comfortable 25-15 and 25-19 wins. SÍ Sørvágur showed some resistance in the third set, but from 12-12, Mjølnir jumped ahead to 22-16 and they looked well on their way for another easy set-win. However, SÍ made a strong comeback and survived two set points to get one on their own with a 27-26 lead but Mjølnir turned it around again, eventually winning the set 29-27.

CEV President Aleksandar Boričić again handed out the medals before Mr Jenis av Rana, Faroese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Culture, presented the players of Mjølnir with the cup trophy - their second in succession, having completed a clean sweep of the domestic competitions last season.

Just before the match, Mr Boričić had held a short speech where he praised the efforts of such a small volleyball association as the Faroese, and said he was especially happy to see so many kids and parents around and to feel such positive energy.

On behalf of the European Volleyball Confederation, Mr Boričić presented Magnus Tausen, President of the Faroese Volleyball Association, with a special plaque in recognition of his hard work and the great results he has achieved at the helm of the Faroese Volleyball family.
