Busy holiday season for San Marino national teams
News from the National Federations
San Marino, December 24, 2019. Despite the holiday season, the national teams of San Marino have a number of exciting activities scheduled for the next couple of weeks.
The Sammarinese Volleyball Federation (FSPAV) will be hosting on Friday, December 27, the annual ‘Memorial Alessandro Casadei’, a competition organised as a tribute to the former setter and captain of the Sammarinese men’s national team, who prematurely passed away in 2009 at the age of 31. This time, Team San Marino will not take part in the event – which will feature teams solely consisting of friends and former teammates of Casadei, playing a series of friendly matches at the home of Sammarinese Volleyball in Serravalle named after Casadei.
San Marino’s men will contest a friendly tournament on December 29 in Bottega along with three teams from the Italian Serie C. “We participate in this competition in order to improve the chemistry within the team. Moreover, we want to make sure that our players stay in shape - despite the long break in the national leagues due to the holiday season,” says head coach Stefano Mascetti.
The U16 women’s and men’s national teams will be playing at the Anderlini Moma Winter Cup in Modena. “We wish to provide our young players with an opportunity to play matches ahead of the upcoming international competitions,” says the head coach of the U16 women, Stefano Sarti (pictured). “This is a very prestigious tournament and a chance for our girls to live Volleyball for three days in a row.”
“The idea is to play opponents performing at a higher level than those my boys play in the national league, so that they have an understanding of what it feels to be playing for a national team,” concludes the coach of the U16 men, Marco Ricci.
