Faroe Islands and Iceland catch flying start at SCA men’s championship

Torshavn, Faroe Islands, October 5, 2019. Iceland and hosts Faroe Islands emerged victorious from the opening matches of the Small Countries Association (SCA) men’s ‘senior’ championship that began on Friday in Torshavn. Iceland came back from a set down and a deficit in the subsequent two sets as well to pull out a rather surprising 3-1 victory, while Faroe Islands celebrated a comprehensive 3-0 triumph over Greenland in their first match on home soil since the 1989 edition of the Island Games.

In an exciting opening match, Iceland came back from a set down to beat Scotland 3-1. After 8-all in the first set, Scotland opened up a three-point lead, which Iceland never recovered from, and Scotland went on to win the set 25-19. Scotland continued their dominance from the start of the second set and took a 10-6 lead, but six balls in a row for Iceland saw them edge 12-10 ahead. The lead shifted back and forth after that before Iceland won the set 25-22, having trailed 19-21. The third set was another even affair where Scotland again had the lead until 17-all when Iceland pulled ahead to win 25-23. In the fourth set, on the other hand, Iceland led all the way and went from 14-13 to 23-17, before winning the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
The Faroese mascot had much to celebrate on Friday following the 3-0 victory of the home team over Greenland

In the other match of the day, the hosts from the Faroe Islands won in straight sets against Greenland who offered little resistance, the sets ending 25-16, 25-14 and 25-18.
On Saturday, the home side are likely to face stiffer opposition when they encounter Scotland who will need to win to have any chance of winning the tournament. Before them, Iceland play against Greenland.
