SCA men’s championship coming up this weekend in Faroe Islands
News from the Zonal Associations
Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, October 4, 2019. The 2019 edition of the Small Countries Association men’s ‘senior’ championship will be running from Friday to Sunday in the Faroe Islands with participation of the national teams of Greenland, Iceland, Scotland and the Faroe Islands (pictured).
Although several international Volleyball competitions have taken place in the Faroe Islands at different levels during the last two decades, this will be the first competitive matches on home ground since 1989 for the Faroese men’s senior national team. Back then, they won the gold medals in the International Island Games - a biennial multi-sport competition for small island-communities, mostly located in Europe.
Thirty years is a long time to wait, and head coach Bárður Bendix Mikkelsen is very much looking forward to the challenge ahead and said he had been pleasantly surprised of the level of the players he had to choose from ahead of the competition. “In the five years I have been national coach, there have never been as many quality players in the build up for a tournament, so that has been very good, and they have worked very hard in training,” Mikkelsen told Faroese radio, KVF.
Team leader Jan Hentze is excited about finally getting some home games too: “It is special to play at home, and hopefully we will have good support from the spectators,” said Hentze, who was a member of the gold-medal winning team in 1989 that played for full houses then.
The championship will be taking place in the capital Tórshavn and the opening match on Friday is between Scotland and Iceland at 16:00 local time, while the hosts Faroe Islands take on Greenland at 18:30.
