CEV School Project reaches far north with first stop in Greenland
News from the National Federations

Ilulissat, Greenland, September 24, 2019. The Greenland Volleyball Federation (KVK) joined the CEV School Project from September 1, 2019 and the programme has now reached as far north as one can almost get. Ilulissat in western Greenland, located approximately 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, was the first stop on the first round trip to schools and Volleyball clubs around Greenland.

This is where in winter you drive with dog sleds, shoot reindeer and musk oxen. This is where for 1.5 months in winter you do not see the sun at all. The city of Ilulissat is Greenland’s third largest, has 4,900 inhabitants, two schools and a Volleyball club, Timersoqatigiiffik 69, which primarily works with kids and youth Volleyball.

“It is a fantastic reception what we received here in Ilulissat,” says Peter Morell from Volleyball Denmark who is leading the project in Greenland. “The schools have accepted the concept of Kids Volley really well and we feel a great need from the teachers to get new inspiration for sports education. The classes address mainly students from grade 2 to 5 and there is no doubt that they liked what we came up with; already after the first school visit, there were 10 new children who joined the club, so there is no doubt that the School Project is making a difference,” Morell continues.

The Chairman of the Greenland Volleyball Federation, Aalipaaraq Kreutzmann is also very happy with the initiative. “There is no doubt that we need new inspiration for Volleyball up here. I am especially pleased with the project as it is aimed at schools and the youth, because these are the ones we need to build our Volleyball future on. The balls and nets from CEV are a wonderful gift we can give to the schools. This means that the teaching of Kids Volley can continue when Peter Morell and Anne Frederiksen return to Denmark,” he said.

The project is now continuing south to Greenland’s second largest city, Sisimiut, before heading to the country’s capital, Nuuk. More than 700 Greenlandic children will become acquainted with Kids Volley during this period.
