Montenegro claim historic gold at Balkan U20 Men Championship
News from the Zonal Associations
Tirana, Albania, June 29, 2019. Tirana played host earlier this week to the 2019 edition of the Balkan U20 Men’s Volleyball Championship, with participation of teams from eight countries. Albania and Serbia topped the charts in their respective groups at the end of the pool phase, but failed to make it to the gold medal match – where Montenegro beat Greece for top honours.
Montenegro made history with their 3-1 victory (25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 25-15) over Greece in the final, while Albania edged Serbia 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-14, 15-5) to secure third place and the bronze medal. The tournament was truly exciting with the top four teams all displaying a very high quality in their performance throughout the whole week.
Romania beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-2 (27-25, 16-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-9) to finish the tournament in fifth place while North Macedonia routed Kosovo 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) in the match for places 7 and 8.
In an effort to raise the exposure of the event, the organisers from the Albanian Volleyball Federation (FSHV) arranged live streaming for all of the matches – with 20 games available on Facebook, a true milestone for Balkan Volleyball competitions.
“The experience we gathered last year while hosting the U19 Women’s European Championship helped us tremendously organise this event,” said FSHV Secretary General Albens Vokopola. “The addition of the live streaming available for fans across the world was the icing on the cake. I believe we did a great job and I would like to thank all teams for the exciting matches and emotions they provided to those in attendance on site as well as to those following from afar.”
