Sammarinese national teams prepare for GSSE
News from the National Federations

San Marino, April 18, 2019. The national teams of San Marino are currently preparing for the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) due to take place in late May in Montenegro.

The men’s side just finished in third place at a tournament featuring another three teams, all from the city of Modena and all competing in the Italian B division. After losing their first match with Villa d’Oro, San Marino regrouped to edge Anderlini MODENA 3-2 even though they were missing some of their key players. Libero Lorenzo Benvenuti is currently contesting the playoffs of the elite Italian Superleague, Matteo Zamagni is playing in the A2 playoffs and Andrea Lazzarini could not take to the court because of back pain.

“It was a good match from all perspectives; the team is improving and growing. Even though we were missing some players, we were still up to the task and this bodes well for the GSSE, which are our main goal this season,” said head coach Stefano Mascetti.

The women’s national team, on the other hand, will be playing a series of friendly matches against teams from the region of Lombardy. These matches will be taking place from Thursday to Saturday, with head coach Loris Polo counting on 14 players for the occasion.

The Sammarinese Volleyball Federation and their National Olympic Committee (CONS) have agreed on a detailed programme in order to make sure that their national teams prepare in the best possible way for the 2019 edition of the GSSE due to take place in Montenegro from May 27 to June 1.
