2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women
Luxembourg, March 12, 2019. On Tuesday night, Allianz MTV STUTTGART will play Italy’s Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA in a fixture that opens the programme of the CEV Volleyball Champions League women’s quarterfinals. Allianz MTV STUTTGART are the first German women’s team to have made it this far in Europe’s elite competition – and much credit goes to their American opposite hitter Krystal Rivers, who has scored as many as 149 points in nine matches this far.
Rivers was especially outstanding when Allianz MTV STUTTGART sealed their ticket to the quarterfinals on February 26 when they cruised to a 3-1 away victory at Maritza PLOVDIV. Rivers scored as many as 29 points, including 21 spikes and 8 blocks.
She will be taking much responsibility on Tuesday night when STUTTGART play NOVARA, a team that achieved something unprecedented in the 4th Round as well. Igor Gorgonzola recorded six straight wins and did not drop a single set in the pool phase – something no other team had previously achieved in the women’s Champions League.
When taking to the court of the SCHARRena, Rivers will find some good friends standing on the other side of the net – since USA national team players Michelle Bartsch-Hackley and Lauren Carlini wear the shirt of NOVARA this season. With an average of 4.66 points per set this far, Rivers will try to add another chapter to the fairy tale that Allianz MTV STUTTGART have been living this far…
