Follow Your Star – Robertlandy Simon
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men
Luxembourg, March 10, 2019. Robertlandy Simon is one of many elite players on the star-studded roster of Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA. The Italian team recorded six wins in a row in Pool B to progress to the quarterfinals of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Men – and they finished the pool stage in style coming back from two sets down in their last home match with Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE. Their eventual 3-2 victory meant the end of the European journey for Zaksa this year. Cuban-born Robertlandy Simon was instrumental to this result as he top scored with 23 points in the end, including an amazing tally of eight blocks.
Simon is one of many top-level players born in Cuba who stand out for their athleticism and the ability to play in different positions – he is an outstanding middle blocker but may well take on the role of opposite hitter as well and he has already done so throughout his career.
The 206 cm tall Robertlandy Simon has already achieved success in the European Cups before – winning gold in the 2013 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup with Copra Elior PIACENZA. He is now hungry for more after winning silver at the last FIVB Club World Championship where Cucine Lube lost the final to TRENTINO Volley. Interestingly, he is one of as many as three Cuban-born players on the roster of Cucine Lube – which includes Osmany Juantorena and Yoandy Leal as well, who have switched allegiance to Italy and Brazil, respectively.
Simon will be one of the assets and trump cards for Lube in the upcoming quarterfinal matches with Dinamo MOSCOW. With a tally of 16 blocks in six matches, Simon was the third best blocker of the League Round – with the charts topped by one of his next opponents, Dmitry Shcherbinin of Dinamo MOSCOW, who amassed 23 stuffs in the fourth round – as many as those killed by Taylor Averill of French sensation CHAUMONT VB 52 HM.
