Follow your star – Melissa Vargas
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women
Luxembourg, January 27, 2019. Melissa Vargas has scored as many as 69 points in the three CEV Champions League matches that she has contested for Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL this season so far. The 19-year-old Cuban opposite trails only Isabelle Haak and Nataliya Goncharova in the scoring charts of the pool stage in Europe’s prime competition and earlier this week she delivered a real show as she propelled the ‘Yellow Angels’ to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over rookies C.S.M. BUCURESTI of Romania.
Despite her young age, Vargas had previous CL experience before moving to Fenerbahce as she wore the shirt of Czech Republic’s Agel PROSTEJOV in the 2015-2016 season. Like many other Cuban players, including Wilfredo Leon, she stands out for her amazing athleticism and reminds of other Cuban Volleyball legends such as Olympic and world champion Mireya Luis.
Vargas had to undergo shoulder injury at a very young age, but after coming back to competitive sport, she is making a name for herself as one of the rising stars on the international stage. On Wednesday, she scored an impressive haul of 26 points as Fenerbahce stormed to their third straight win in Pool E and you can tell that there is certainly more to come from such a still fairly ‘raw gem’!
