Coach of the Year Heynen chases further success with VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN
News from the clubs
Luxembourg, December 14, 2018. ‘Men’s Team Coach of the Year’ Vital Heynen is marching from success to success. The Belgian-born coach and his club team, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, have qualified for the ‘grand finale’ of the German national cup due to take place in Mannheim on February 24, 2019. Heynen and VfB will be chasing there a fifth title since 2014 for the team from the Lake of Constance – and sixteenth overall in the club’s history.
Their opponent will be SVG LÜNEBURG, who will contest their second national cup final after doing so in 2015.
VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN claimed a 3-1 victory (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22) in their semi-final with SWD powervolleys DÜREN to secure their spot in the final for the third straight season. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN hold an all-time record with 15 national cup titles to their name.
“We knew that this was going to be an incredibly difficult and challenging match,” Heynen said. “Both teams played better than last week when we crossed our paths in the national league. These victories are just a great thing for the team. It does not matter whether this is the national cup or Supercup – for the last couple of years we always made it to the final of all competitions. After reaching the final, we obviously won to win that match too. We are chasing more titles and trophies.”
SVG LÜNEBURG, on the other hand, will be hunting their first title after they moved to the highest division of the Bundesliga in 2014. The matchup in February will be a repeat of the 2015 final, which went to ‘Häfler’. SVG LÜNEBURG celebrated a sensational 3-2 victory in the semi-final with BERLIN Recycling Volleys, one of the major achievements in the club’s history. The team coached by former Volleyball star Stefan Hübner came back from two sets down and 9-12 in the tiebreak to seal a 3-2 win (18-25, 22-25, 26-25, 25-19, 15-13).
