"I hope that with our great home fans more is possible!"
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Dresden, Germany, December 3, 2018. Setter Lena Möllers moved from Romania to Dresden earlier this summer. Why the Bocholt native almost wanted to stop playing Volleyball, how she found her way to DRESDNER SC and why she believes that on Wednesday against Yamamay e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO even more is possible than in the first match, you can find out in our interview with her.
The next highlight is the return match in the CEV Cup against Yamamay e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO. Would you have expected in advance that the away match in Italy could have ended in a victory for your team?
We knew that we could play a good game. We always had the feeling that something is possible. Only in the fourth set, when we were trailing 9-17, that hope disappeared a little. However, we played with glowing hearts and took many risks. It is a pity that the great performance we delivered in the fifth set was not enough for us to win. However, we are satisfied with the two points we took from that match and have a good starting position for Wednesday.
Do you expect BUSTO ARSIZIO to be even more aggressive, also because they may have underestimated you a bit in the first match?
They will certainly give everything to defeat us clearly but we want to win as well and I hope that with our great home fans behind us more is possible than in the first match. We want to play even better and make it one round further.
In addition to Vilsbiburg, you played in three different countries with stops in Novara, Bolzano (Italy), Béziers (France) and Blaj (Romania). Where did you like it the most?
In Italy and France. Bolzano has a wonderful environment and it was very pleasant there. France was also great, since the place where I lived was not so far from the Mediterranean Sea.
What about the last season in Romania?
Unfortunately, I do not remember that so fondly. The club aimed at much success, but not everything was up to that standard. However, I still learned a lot about myself, my mental strength and I think not every Volleyball player has the chance to play a Champions League final.
Nevertheless, the course was so negative for you that you even thought about quitting the sport…
Yes, that is true. Simply because I did not enjoy it anymore and I always told myself that it was time to quit when I would reach that point. On the other hand, I did not want to stop after a negative experience.
After that came the offer from DRESDNER SC…
Yes, exactly. I did not have to think too long about that. I knew that there was a great environment here, everything was very professional and that I was in good hands. Alex [Waibl, the head coach] also showed me there are still a few things that I can improve. So right from the start, I had the feeling that people wanted to work with me.
After your time at VC Olympia Berlin, Mareen von Römer (Apitz) was another reason why you did not switch to Dresden, but to Vilsbiburg. How did it happen that you signed for the club this summer?
I expected Mareen to play more and to play most of the games from the beginning. Moreover, because she simply belongs to Dresden, I cannot imagine anything else. However, Alex convinced me that he would like to work with me, that I would get my chance and against SCHWERIN last weekend, it was a lot of fun for me to stand on the field for a longer period.
Last season you thought about quitting, now on Wednesday you will play again on the European stage. How long can the fans still see you in your Volleyball shirt?
Since I found the fun and joy in my sport again at DRESDNER SC, it is reasonable that I will have one or two more seasons of competitive sport.
