Asterix record 16 aces on the way to 3-1 shutout of LP SALO
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Salo, Finland, November 30, 2018. Belgium reigning national champions Asterix Avo BEVEREN had a great night on Thursday, especially from the service line as they recorded as many as 16 aces while storming to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22) victory over LP SALO in the opening round of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women.

After dropping the first set, Asterix Avo BEVEREN turned another gear on their serve and stepped up their blocking game as well. They took the next three sets in front of some 1,200 Finnish fans and eventually celebrated a sweet win. LP SALO, on the other hand, had to be content with taking the 100th set win in matches of the European Cups.

The visiting team coached this time by Kris Vansnick recorded 16 aces and 15 blocks. Middle blockers Marlies Janssens (20 points) and Silke Van Avermaet (15 points) were pivotal towards Asterix’s victory. Kertu Laak was the best scorer for the home team with 18 points.

Kris Vansnick, head coach of Asterix Avo BEVEREN: “Luckily, we found our way into the game after losing the first set. We had good energy on court and worked very well in defence. LP SALO are an experienced team and they have good players, so we will have to fight hard in the second match at home as well.”

Tomi Lemminkäinen, head coach of LP SALO: “The opponents played like we expected they would do. They served extremely hard, but 16 aces on our home court is a way too much. Their middle blockers were very good too. We can win games in our domestic league just by avoiding making mistakes, but we cannot do the same in this type of matches.”

Elsewhere, VK PROSTEJOV of Czech Republic needed 65 minutes only to stamp a landslide 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-18, 25-16) in their away match at Levski SOFIA in Bulgaria.
