DRESDNER SC narrowly miss sensation in Italy!
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Busto Arsizio, Italy, November 28, 2018. What a game, what a fight and what a feat! The players of DRESDNER SC narrowly missed a sensation on Wednesday evening in the first round of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women in Italy. However, the team of head coach Alexander Waibl will start from the pluses of their 2-3 loss (21-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 10-15) for the return match on December 5 when they will be hosting Yamamay e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO at the Margon Arena in Dresden.
With the two sets won, the German team travel home with one point. Should they win 3-0 or 3-1 next week, DREDNER SC would make it to the next round of the competition. On the other hand, a 3-2 victory would call for an all-important Golden Set.
After 121 minutes of self-sacrificing struggle, the unbeaten runner-up of the Italian league used their second match point to seal a 3-2 victory. The top scorers on the DSC side were Lena Stigrot and Sasa Planinsec with 21 points apiece. Maria Segura and Ivana Mrdak scored 14 points each.
“If anyone had told me that we would have taken a point after such a tight match, you would have said: Wow, awesome. The team fought excellently and never gave up and came back great in the fourth set. We did not have the right balance in our serve reception in the first and third set. It would have been even possible to achieve more today, but the bottom line was BUSTO ARSIZIO were just the better side, so they deserve this victory. However, we have all the options for the return match,” said Waibl after the game.
“It was a great fight. We have shown everyone that we are a team that always wants to win and fight and never gives up. Today we did a great job and really acted as a team. We will see who has the last word in the second match,” said Maria Segura after the game.
