News from the Zonal Associations
Vaduz, Liechtenstein, August 7, 2018. Teams from Cyprus were the dominant force at the Small Countries Division (SCD) zonal Beach Volleyball event held in Vaduz, where Scotland and Monaco prevented a clean sweep of the medals by the players from the Mediterranean island.
The men’s tournament featured an all-Cypriot gold medal match, with Dimitris Apostolou/Sotiris Siapanis eventually emerging victorious from a close fight with their compatriots Georgios Chrysostomou and Antonis Liotatis (21-14, 17-21, 15-12). The women’s final needed a tiebreaker as well to determine the eventual winners of the competition, with Manolina Konstantinou/Zoi Konstantopoulou edging Scotland’s Lynne Beattie/Melissa Coutts 15-21, 21-11, 15-10. Local favourites Ramona Kaiser/Laura Marxer of Liechtenstein finished the competition in fourth place after losing the bronze medal match to Mariota Angelopoulou and Daria Gusarova of Cyprus.
Never before has a SCD competition raised so much interest. As many as 28 teams from eight nations participated in the competition open to players from the 15 National Federations affiliated to the CEV Small Countries Division. The men’s tournament featured a total 16 teams while a record 12 teams participated in the women’s competition.
The first week of Beacharena 2018 resulted in great interest among the spectators as well. Despite the high summer temperatures, as many as 4,000 Beach Volleyball fans found their way to the Vaduz Städtle. The party is going to continue later this week with the 1-Star/Satellite event running from Wednesday to Sunday.
