Chinese fans travel all the way to Bucharest to support VakifBank and Zhu Ting
2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women
Istanbul, Turkey, May 2, 2018. VakifBank ISTANBUL will be chasing this coming weekend the fourth trophy in as many competitions they have contested this season. They recently claimed the Turkish national league to go with their titles from the Turkish Supercup and national cup – and later this weekend will be vying for their fourth CEV Volleyball Champions League crown in Bucharest.
It took five dramatic matches for VakifBank to claim the championship series with city rivals Eczacibasi VitrA with actions televised in as many as 17 countries and some two million Chinese Volleyball fans following the last match on TV as well.
The Chinese fans of VakifBank have been following the matches and training sessions of the Turkish team both at home and away. Some 200 Chinese fans representing Chinese-funded enterprises, as well as teachers and international students plus Chinese diplomats living in Istanbul and people coming from overseas attended each of the five matches with Eczacibasi. They supported the team until the end of the ‘grand finale’ and developed a great bond with the Turkish fans.
The story began last year when VakifBank signed Chinese superstar Zhu Ting. China’s national hero and Olympic champion received the award for the Most Valuable Player of the Turkish national league and she is the top scorer of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League on 190 points as well.
VakifBank ISTANBUL and Chinese fans have been coming together in many ways, through games, social media etc. VakifBank President Mr Osman Demren stated at the last press conference the importance of enjoying the support provided by fans from overseas and expressed his gratitude to the Chinese supporters during a visit paid by Mr Cui Wei, Chinese Consul General in Istanbul, to the club.
There is no doubt that VakifBank will enjoy that same support during the upcoming #CLF4Bucharest as well – with the titleholders set to play Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO on Saturday in the semis in a repeat of last year’s gold medal match.
