SSC Palmberg SCHWERIN repeat Italian sensation to move on to #CEVCupW semis
SSC vs. Istanbul in the CEV Cup
Schwerin, Germany, March 1, 2018. After their sensational 3-0 away victory last week, Germany’s SSC Palmberg SCHWERIN produced another surprise as they beat Italy’s Pomì CASALMAGGIORE 3-1 at home to progress to the semis of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women where they will be playing Turkey’s heavyweight Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL.
• Everyone expected a close match but SCHWERIN stormed to a 16-12 lead as the hosts combined solid defence with strong attacks. The visitors attempted a comeback but struggled in defence, this resulting in a 25-18 win for the home side.
• CASALMAGGIORE claimed a 3-0 advantage in the early stages of the second set, and were able to hold on to that at the first technical time-out (8-6). As they lacked precision in attack, SCHWERIN could not show the same speed and put the same pressure as in the previous set, with the Italians eventually pulling out a 25-20 victory.
• SCHWERIN found back their best game in the third set (14-8) and trailing by six points, the Italian coaching staff asked for a timeout after two straight powerful attacks by home star Louisa Lippmann. The audience witnessed many long rallies, mostly ending in favour of SCHWERIN, while the Italians could not show the same quality as in the second set. SCHWERIN stormed to a landslide 21-10 lead and at this point, they seemed to have pocketed their ticket to the semis. CASALMAGGIORE could not fight back and a missed serve by Valentina Zago sealed a 25-15 win for the hosts and their progression to the next round.
• SCHWERIN coach Felix Koslowski used the fourth set as an opportunity to try out some of his younger players; CASALMAGGIORE rushed to an 8-3 lead but the Germans kept fighting and edged ahead at 14-13. The score remained close up to 24-all, with the Germans eventually having the upper hand at 28-26 to celebrate a 3-1 victory.
Denise Hanke, player of SSC Palmberg SCHWERIN: “We are super happy that we could win both games and have the fantastic opportunity to play in the next round. The matches were super intense, but we played really well.”
Cristiano Lucchi, head coach of Pomì CASALMAGGIORE: “We have to show respect to the team of SSC Palmberg SCHWERIN. They played very well and put up a great fight. We had some big problems in reception.”
