‘Spicy’ clash between German rivals
2018 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Dresden, Germany, February 19, 2018. It is always something special when two teams from the same country lock horns on the international stage. Those matches are especially exciting as there is a lot of prestige at stake. However, DRESDNER SC and Allianz MTV STUTTGART take it to the top: these two clubs share so much history.
DRESDNER SC won the German championship in 2015 against STUTTGART. One year later the German powerhouses clashed in the German Cup Finals and the finals of the German League as well. DRESDNER SC won both titles, which was quite a hard pill to swallow for their rivals from Stuttgart. However, Allianz MTV came back strong in the 2016/2017 season. They first won the Supercup against DRESDNER SC at the beginning of the season, before eliminating their opponent from Saxony in the German Cup and they even won the semi-finals after a thrilling best-of-three series in the national league Playoffs.
This season it is 1:1 right now as both teams won their home matches in the German League. Therefore, fans can start looking forward to another incredibly exciting series between these two squads. They should not miss the clash between the German rivals and tune in since LAOLA1.tv streams the first leg on Wednesday, February 21, starting at 19:00 CET.
Just two days before the quarterfinals of the CEV Cup, DRESDNER SC announced that head coach Alexander Waibl will stay at the helm of the team for another three years until 2021. The 49-year-old is by far the most successful coach in the history of the club. He won the German Championship in 2014, 2015 & 2016, German Cup in 2010 and 2016 and in his first year at DSC, he won the 2010 CEV Challenge Cup too.
“There is always new challenges and opportunities here, we have great supporters and I really value the relationship with the management of the club,” says Waibl. “So I never wasted a single thought to discuss a future without DRESDNER SC, even though I have been in Dresden for quite some time now.”
Waibl himself has a special connection to Stuttgart. He was born there and he even coached the club before going to Dresden in the summer of 2009. How fitting that the next big challenge for him and DRESDNER SC is Allianz MTV STUTTGART once again.
