‘Let’s All Play Volleyball’ programme involves hundreds of schoolchildren in Malta

Valletta, Malta, November 7, 2017. With the new scholastic year underway, the Malta Volleyball Association’s (MVA) ‘Let’s All Play Volleyball’ programme continued at the St. Paul’s Bay Primary School, which is part of Maria Regina College. As part of this programme, the MVA has been conducting a series of visits to primary and middle schools, and organising events for schoolchildren.
In line with the theme of the programme, ‘Let’s all play’, these activities focus on giving children exposure to physical activity and Volleyball within a fun environment, while enabling them to experience aspects of physical activity, such as basic motor skills, agility, movement coordination, and teamwork.
The programme is supported by Fundación MAPFRE, which together with the Malta Volleyball Association, shares a concern for the increasing consequences related to the lack of physical exercise, particularly amongst children, and the certainty that in most cases, this is due to a lack of awareness of the positive effects of healthy lifestyle habits, in particular that of regular exercise.
Martin Galea, Chairman of Mapfre Middlesea, on behalf of Fundación MAPFRE confirmed that both parties “strongly believe that the situation can be greatly improved by encouraging children to participate in activities where they can enjoy physical exercise, including activities within a team sports environment, in a spirit of fun and teamwork.”
“The aim of this programme is to develop children’s interest in regular physical activity through participation in a sport, at least at a basic level,” Malta Volleyball Association President Jesmond Saliba explained. “We also see this as a vehicle for social inclusion through sport, something which we, as an Association, strongly believe in. Hence, the slogan adopted for the programme, ‘Let’s all play Volleyball!’”
The MVA’s Leonard Zammit Munro, who has been entrusted with this project, said that ‘Let’s all play’ has managed to provide visibility and exposure to the Volleyball game amongst more than 500 children this scholastic year.
“This project is one of the flag bearers of the efforts undertaken by the MVA to promote the sport at grassroots level, particularly with the younger generations. Our aim is that of ensuring that Volleyball becomes a game of choice for those who are looking for a sporting activity to complement the physical education at schools.”
Zammit Munro also thanked the Ministry of Education for their constant support to ensure the successful implementation of this project.
