Asterix claim Belgium’s Supercup on eve of historic CL debut
News from the National Federations
Beveren, Belgium, October 13, 2017. Asterix Avo BEVEREN (formerly known as Asterix KIELDRECHT) have claimed Belgium’s Supercup for the tenth time in their history after storming to a 3-1 victory over VDK GENT Dames (25-27, 25-16, 25-23, 35-33).
The winners of last year’s national league and national cup, Asterix showed a lack of consistency in their performance but that was still enough to emerge victorious in the end. VDK GENT Dames, last year’s national cup runners-up, came from behind (22-24) to win the first set 27-25. Everything seems to be going well for Asterix in the fourth set, but VDK GENT came back from 18-24 down and Asterix needed as many as ten match points before ‘Yellow Tiger’ Celine Van Gestel had the last word to seal a 3-1 victory for BEVEREN.
“Of course we are happy with the trophy, but we have to play better if we want to qualify for the third round in our first appearance in the CEV Volleyball Champions League Cup next week,” admitted Asterix coach Gert Vande Broek. Asterix Avo BEVEREN will play next week some kind of a ‘derby’ with Dutch national champions SLIEDRECHT Sport in the second round of Europe’s elite club competition.
