Luxembourg, April 21, 2017. Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO have been making this season only their second appearance in the CEV Volleyball Champions League – and this weekend they will contest the most important matches in their still ‘young’ history when hosting the final act of Europe’s elite club competition. On Saturday night they will take to the court at Palaverde in Treviso playing Russia’s Dinamo MOSCOW for a spot in the final that will crown the new ‘queens’ of European Volleyball.
Imoco Volley are Italy’s reigning national champions and the ‘Panthers’ made it only two days ago to the semis of their national championship after a three-match series with Il Bisonte FIRENZE. This season they won the Italian cup already but this weekend they will contest by far the most challenging and prestigious matches they have ever taken on.
Imoco Volley debuted in the CEV Volleyball Champions League back in the 2013-2014 season when they reached the Playoffs 12, ultimately losing to Russia’s Omichka OMSK REGION. On Saturday evening, they will be trying to make amends for that setback when locking horns with another Russian team, Dinamo MOSCOW.
Even though the Italian team have to deal with the injuries that occurred to Robin de Kruijf and Samantha Bricio, they are still motivated to use the home-court advantage in an effort to repeat the sensation caused last year by another Italian team – Pomì CASALMAGGIORE, who emerged victorious from the Final Four they hosted in Montichiari.
There are quite many similarities since last season CASALMAGGIORE routed a Russian team, Dinamo KAZAN, in the semis before taking on the winners of a Turkish derby in the gold medal match. This scenario could materialise again if the ‘Panthers’ beat Dinamo MOSCOW and get the right to challenge VakifBank or Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL for Europe’s most coveted Volleyball crown.
There is therefore a lot to look forward to – especially knowing that Imoco Volley can rely on the largest audience in the Italian national league, with approximately 4,000 fans attending each of their home matches. The supporters surely will not be willing to miss on this historic event where the ‘Panthers’ will be trying to add one extra accolade to the impressive and ever-growing showcase of the Italian Volleyball family.
