TRENTINO sail to CEV Cup semis after claiming remake of Italian derby
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Trento, Italy, March 15, 2017. TRENTINO Diatec secured their progression to the semis of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men after only two sets of their rematch with LPR Volley PIACENZA before rallying to a 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-15). TRENTINO will make their third straight appearance in the semis of a European competition, after in 2015 and 2016 they reached the gold medal match of the CEV Volleyball Cup and CEV Volleyball Champions League, respectively. In the next round of the competition, TRENTINO will play Turkey’s Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL, first at home on March 28 and after that away, on April 2.
Two weeks ago, TRENTINO had cruised to a 3-0 away victory and a very solid performance in all aspects of the game – and especially at serving and blocking – helped the hosts take the two sets they needed to make it to the semis. After achieving their main goal, TRENTINO replaced many of their starters and yet achieved their 18th straight home victory this season. Sebastian Solé stood out in the early stages of the match before Matteo Burgsthaler stepped in to replace him, eventually receiving the award for the MVP of the game.
“We reached our goal,” said TRENTINO head coach Angelo Lorenzetti at the end of the match. “We wanted to qualify to the semis so badly and I think that the team showed that desire in the first two sets, playing very well except for the attack, which was not working in the best way. In the second part of the match, the right thing to do was to provide our second lines with an opportunity to play and feel the rhythm of the game and the feedback I got was very positive. After some little troubles at the beginning, the players found their rhythm and we eventually won the game. Now we can concentrate on the national league semi-finals against PERUGIA.”
