Olympiacos end BEVEREN’s winning streak to set sights on Challenge Cup semis
2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women
Beveren, Belgium, February 23, 2017. The winning streak of Belgium’s Asterix Avo BEVEREN ended on Wednesday night after 21 straight matches – including domestic competitions and the European Cups – when the hosts lost 2-3 (22-25, 25-11, 25-19, 20-25, 12-15) their first matchup with Olympiacos PIRAEUS on schedule for the quarterfinals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women.
Olympiacos claimed the first set after breaking away halfway through – and BEVEREN were no more able to make up for this deficit. The hosts controlled the match with ease in the second and third sets, with everything going just smoothly for the Belgian national cup winners. However, PIRAEUS fought back in the fourth set – which they won to call for a tiebreak. The visitors from Greece rallied to a four-point lead in the fifth set and even though BEVEREN tried their best to stop the attacks killed by Saskia Hippe, the German player did not make any mistakes and helped Olympiacos cruise to a 3-2 win, eventually top scoring with 22 points.
Some 450 fans in attendance enjoyed a great game with many long rallies and both teams fighting with everything they had to secure a victory. The re-match will take place in two weeks in Greece with the eventual winners of this double clash progressing to the semis.
