TRENTINO survive early scare to go for Italian derby in CEV Cup quarterfinals
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Trento, Italy, February 15, 2017. TRENTINO Diatec turned the page after their heavy loss to Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA in the Italian national league – and they did so by qualifying for the quarterfinals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men following their 3-1 home victory (22-25, 30-28, 25-12, 25-20) over Finland’s VaLePa SASTAMALA. TRENTINO will now go for an Italian derby with LPR Volley PIACENZA for a spot in the semis.
Two weeks ago, TRENTINO had stormed to a 3-0 away victory in Finland but the re-match was a much more challenging one. VaLePa SASTAMALA tried to cause a sensation and succeeded in doing so by taking the opening set – before TRENTINO trailed also in the second one. This is, however, where the course of the match changed and after coming from behind, the hosts rallied to a comprehensive 3-1 victory. Team captain Filippo Lanza contributed to this victory with 11 points after missing the early stages of the match – as middle blocker Sebastian Solé top scored with 16 points, including four blocks and Gabriele Nelli further helped the home side from the service line.
“It was a match similar to the one we played in Finland, with the first two sets being very close and the remaining going very easy for us,” said Angelo Lorenzetti, head coach of TRENTINO Diatec. “We did not put enough pressure with our service in the early stages of the match and as a result, our opponents found it quite easy to score with their side-out. We had some difficult moments but the team responded well. As soon as Lanza joined the game, things went a lot better. I am happy because this victory is a boost of confidence, especially ahead of the matchup with MODENA coming up on Sunday where we will take on a much more dangerous opponent.”
